Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker :Review
Here we are, two years after Metal Gear Solid 4 took over three months of my life -being that I had no work or school at the time, I spent my days taking down Outer Haven, I now have a new Metal Gear venture to take over my life, at home, and on the go!
Metal Gear?!
We find ourselfs ten years after operation Snake Eater, Big Boss has left his county behind in order to start “Militaires Sans Frontières -Soldiers Without Borders” a group of mercenaries who will fight in any war, for a price. Big Boss is commissioned to investigate suspicious military activity’s in Costa Rica. This, along with a sob story about a girl named Paz, Big Boss accepts this mission. We soon discover there is a lot more to what is going on in Costa Rica than meets the eye.
As with every Metal Gear we have an array of fascinating characters, each with their own unique personalities and ambitions. I’m not going into detail about the characters, to avoid possible spoilers. Codec calls do not disappoint, as they help to immerse you into the setting of the game’s time line, as well as providing you with background on each of the characters. Codec calls can be listened to before every mission.
Visuals in Peace Walker are given the care of a fully fledged Playstation 2 game, its a rare treat to see this on a portable console. The comic style of Portable Ops along with the guest artist Ashley Wood, make a welcome return. These stylized cut scenes help create an intense atmosphere for some of the most important moments of the game.

The Love Pack~
Now we all know that the controls for the PSP suffer from a bad reputation, but Peace Walker takes care to give you the best possible control layout suited to your play style, from the classic square to shoot of the old top down Metal Gears, to the shooter style of Metal Gear Solid 4. I personally find these controls to be the best controls of any PSP game to date.
The improvement from Portable Ops, range from CQC, to solider recovery. The CQC is the most polished of any Metal Gear Solid game, I have never found myself using CQC as much I have in this game. Using non-lethal weapons in Peace Walker has the most rewarding feel of the franchise, I never really felt bad for taking the life of another soldier, but something about Peace Walker made me feel bad about killing someone, maybe it was Paz on the codec asking me to try and spare there life, and who can deny the request of a cute girl?
Other changes from Portable Ops include, you no long control a four man cell, but have the recruited soldiers sent out on missions know as “Outer Ops” you can select up to eight men and mechs -I.E. tanks, helicopters- to go out into the world and earn some GP, which can be used to upgrade and research weapons. For the most part you will be playing as Big Boss, as he is used for all the story missions, and you will then have the option to use a recruited solider in missions known as “Extra Ops” these are side quests, which range from having to find documents, to rescuing prisoners.
The recovery of solider has had a massive revamp, no more dragging people back to a truck for five minutes, we now have a beauty of an item called the “Fulton Recovery System” which lifts a soldier into the sky to be taken back to base for recruitment. This makes level progression smoother and recruiting soldiers more fun. The improvement to how each level is played out is extremely well done, you no longer end a mission to find you have a boss battle against a tank, only to realize you have a loadout of smoke grenades and a tranquilizer gun. Boss battle are treated as their own mission so when you have finished your current mission, you are given notice as to what is coming up and are given a chance to prepare for it.
We have come to the end.
Sing a Song ♫
By now if you are a Metal Gear fan, you should have this game. If you own a PSP and don’t own this, you are missing out on the best PSP game 2010. The story is griping to the very end and if you stick around for the post game content you will be treated to a fantastic surprise. Graphically this is above standard for PSP games. If you are lucky to have friends who own a PSP and this you will have some seriously fun Co-Ops, rivaled only by that of the Monster Hunter co-op. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker delivers on every front to bring the best Metal Gear experience to date.
